99% of people are wrong… how many holes are there really in this shirt? 

Visual puzzles are a great way to test your sense of observation. At first glance, this image seems very simple: a red t-shirt with several holes visible. Yet, the majority of people give a wrong answer, because they only look at the front of the garment.

Take a few seconds before reading the rest… How many holes do you count?

Why is this enigma so misleading?

 Our brain tends to count only the most obvious openings. But you have to think about the whole t-shirt:

• The opening of the pass.
• The two sleeves.
• Opening the bottom of the shirt.
• Large holes visible on the fabric.

By observing carefully, we distinguish 6 holes in the fabric. Since these holes completely pass through the t-shirt, they are visible through the cardboard placed behind.

The solution

The calculation is as follows:

• 1 opening for the collar.
• 2 openings for the sleeves.
• 1 opening at the bottom of the shirt.
• 6 torn holes in the fabric.

Total : 10 holes.

It is this answer that is usually expected for this puzzle.

Why do many people respond 6?

Most participants only have the visible tears on the fabric and forget that the normal openings of a t-shirt are also… holes!

These challenges show how our brain automatically filters certain obvious information.
