I had space. I had stability. And I believed, deeply, that helping someone you love in a difficult moment is simply what you do.


All I asked in return was something I thought was reasonable: she would help look after my 3-year-old son while I worked from 9 to 5.


She smiled immediately when I suggested it.


At the time, it felt like everything had fallen into place. A win-win situation. A struggling friend getting support, and a working mother getting a bit of help at home.

After that day, we made changes.


My friend eventually found a smaller, more stable arrangement that suited her recovery. I adjusted my childcare plan to ensure my son was always in an environment designed specifically for his needs.


We remained friends, but the dynamic between us changed. It became more honest, more aware of boundaries, and less built on unspoken expectations.


And most importantly, I stopped assuming that goodwill alone is enough to carry responsibility.
